Review: Leather Single Pen Sleeve from eBay

I'm always on the lookout for affordable pen cases and sleeves. Ideally, I look for something durable and which would provide good protection for my pens at a reasonable price. Today's pen sleeve fits the bill.

So let's have a look at this single leather pen sleeve which I bought from eBay for around 3 US dollars. It has no name, so the best way to find it is to type "leather handcraf single pen case" on the eBay search bar. Yep, you read that right: "handcraf." (Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with the seller.) The pen case comes from Hong Kong and is shipped internationally for free. This single pen sleeve is basically two oblong pieces of leather stitched together with one end kept open. The stitching appears strong and secure and hasn't given me any problems in the months that I've had it. The dimensions of the sleeve are: Length: 15.7 cm / 6.18 inches

Width: 3.6 cm / 1.42 inches The sleeve arrives rather flat. When I first got it, it could only comfortably fit a wooden pencil in it. But knowing that leather stretches, I placed a whiteboard marker inside and waited for a few days. And...tada! My fountain pens fit after that. So now the opening of the sleeve easily enlarges to around 1.8 cm / 0.71 inches (measured with a caliper).

As can be seen in the pictures, the pen sleeve comfortably holds my TWSBI Diamond 580 AL. It's a snug fit so the pen wouldn't suddenly fall off.

The inside of the sleeve appears rough but it is quite soft to the touch. It hasn't scratched any of my pens. The sleeve is also quite thick and provides good protection. The leather on one side is 0.19 cm / 0.075 inches thick.

The biggest issue with this sleeve is that pens with snap caps could get stuck inside. It's a snug fit so when you grab your pen, you might end up with only the cap on hand. It's not impossible to take out -- just twist the sleeve from side to side or squeeze it from below to make the pen slowly inch out. So in short, this is best for pens with screw on caps, or for pens with no caps like the Pilot Vanishing Point. You could still insert your snap cap pen, just be ready to mount the occasional rescue mission.

Overall, this is a great buy! It's a sturdy, thick, leather pen sleeve that provides adequate protection. Now you could feel free to put your pen in your pocket along with your keys! (I still shudder at the thought, haha.) Enjoy!
